My Goal of Teaching Essay - 543 Words

To state that my goal is to become a teacher in the primary grades of elementary school is somewhat like writing a one-sentence synopsis of an intricate and wonderful dream. In Websters Dictionary the word goal is defined as: A point towards which effort or movement is directed; the objective point or terminus that one is striving to reach; the end aimed at. In each of the definitions the aim of the goal is stagnant. My goal of teaching feels much more like a living thing. I would define it more as a journey than a goal. I do not remember a time when I was not interested in becoming a teacher. Although I followed a different career path when I was young, I never let go of my dream to teach. For various reasons it was pushed to†¦show more content†¦I started volunteering in my childrens classrooms. I would do the fun stuff like plan parties or go on field trips, but I also enjoyed working with the students in writing workshops and reading partnerships. I found enjoyment and fulfillment not only working with my own children but in helping the other students as well. I volunteer in the library and the school office. Outside of their school I became a Girl Scout leader and taught religious education at our church. I balanced my volunteering with children to include volunteering for children. I became actively involved in parent-teacher groups. I held positions that ranged from the worker at a carnival, up to and including the president of a PTO. My husbands job required that we move around, and I found volunteer a good way to break into a community. The volunteering I always seemed to enjoy most was in some way involved with children. As my children grew and I began to think about returning to the work force I knew I would be happiest doing something that involved children. It was my husband who suggested returning to school for a teaching degree. With all the years of working with children behind me, it seemed like a natural fit. I plan to finish my schooling and have a position teaching by the fall of 2001. Securing a position teaching does not truly fulfill my goal.
